ORDERS FOR BRUIN

                                                                                ANNEXE XI

Some time ago it was decided that our Organisation should establish contact with the Underground Press in HOLLAND. To implement this plan a very reliable man was trained in ENGLAND and sent to BELGIUM from where he could reach HOLLAND by means of a line of communication which we were operating between the two countries.

His instructions were to establish initial contact with the newspaper "HET PAROOL" and for this purpose he was given an address which had been provided by Mr. WARENDORF who also gave him verbally all necessary information and instructions for his mission.

The code name of the agent was BRUTUS and he and another man flew to BELGIUM on the night of October 18th; the plane however, was shot down and failed to return; we were later informed by our organisation in BELGIUM that BRUTUS and his companion had arrived at a 'safe house', but had lost all their equipment and money and therefore required fresh instructions.

We instructed them to proceed on their various missions, making their wat into HOLLAND by means of our communication line, the WT-Operator attached to which would handle their messages. Accordingly on 29th October we received a message from BRUTUS via this channel informing us that he had arrived safely in HOLLAND and that his work was progressing satisfactorily.

The first disquieting news was received on 4th November when our Intelligence Service Informed us that a certain George van VLIET has established his identity with an organisation in HOLLAND by means of the sentence "George, het klopt als een zwerende duim" which was broadcast over Radio Orange. On the next day the same service further informed us that Van VLIET, by means of the broadcast, had also established the identity of two other alleged agents whose future arrival, he said, was announced a long time ago. We had mentioned the future arrival of two men but they were, in fact, never sent; they had they been they would have been provided with their own password to those who were to receive them.

As we know that van VLIET had been connected with one man who had used our communication line we warned the WT-Operator of this line and the Intelligence Service source of information of the fact that he has misused a broadcast and strongly advocated his liquidation.

On November 11th we heard again from the Intelligence Service who passed to us a message from BRUTUS received over their line to the effect that he was not satisfied as to the reliability of the operator he was using; he asked for a repeat through the new channel of all messages we had sent to him and suggested certain checks for us in future traffic. we accordingly repeated previous messages to him.

The operator he was now using was further told that BRUTUS was a bona fide agent, whose sole mission was to contact the Underground Press, and was in no wat connected with the two agents whose arrival had been mentioned by Van VLIET.

Between 11th and 15th November information was received from other sources which established beyond any doubt that Van VLIET was a Gestapo agent and that the WT-set of our communication line was operated by the enemy. This may also have been discovered by BRUTUS and been the reason for his communication with us via the other channel.

On November 25th we asked the Intelligence Service to warn the Underground Press that BRUTUS must be known to the enemy and might be shadowed; a description of BRUTUS was added and the request that, if possible, he should be warned and told to break all contact with the communication line and its WT-Operator: he was told to try to make his own way out of HOLLAND.

Messages subsequently received from what we now know to be enemy-controlled sources lead us to fear that BRUTUS may have been captured. On 29th November the other agent who went with BRUTUS arrived in this country. You have been shown the complete Dutch interrogation report of this person, together with further information received up to this date.
